The daughter of Jean de Poitiers, sieur de Saint-Val-lier, Diane de Poitiers, duchess de Valentinois, married Louis de Brézé, a grandson of King charles v III, who left her a widow at age 32. She soon became the mistress of the future king henry ii, who was 19 years younger than she. At first her influence over him was shared with the duchess d'Étampes, mistress of Francis I, until the latter's death. Henceforth having great power, Diane de Poitiers supported the suppression of Protestantism. She encouraged the arts, and Henry II built a château for her at Anet.
